Caelan Doris Makes Irish Selection But Joe McCarthy Misses Out

Rugby squad announcement news

Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has selected captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the fall Tests, however lock McCarthy is absent.

The captain, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, but it remains unclear if he will be fit to face the All Blacks in the US on November 1.

Lock Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot issue suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.

Northern province forward Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash are also absent due to fitness concerns, and number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery following the Lions tour.

Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new player in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped Munster pair Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".

After facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous encounter, the team host the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented Farrell, back to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to Australia.

In a largely familiar-looking squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again vie for the starting number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is still available, with the two players set to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming URC match at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen with Farrell deciding not to calling up Leinster's Byrne.

At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer international wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a recall for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey form an experienced group of midfield options. Osborne is a further choice in the centres, though the 23-year-old is additionally a frontrunner to cover for Keenan at full-back.

Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over Georgia and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Ireland pack. The front rower has been in a couple of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in Ireland A's defeat by the English in the English city previously.

The 22-year-old was included in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a cap.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is retained, and veteran Ulster lock Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.

Conan, who played in all three Lions matches over the summer, is set to cover for the captain if the skipper fails to recover full fitness soon enough to play the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on Tuesday.
