Old Deep-Sea Nets from France Transform into Vital Defense To Counter Enemy Drones in the War Zone

Along the harbor docks of France's Brittany coast, accumulations of old nets have become a regular occurrence.

The usable duration of ocean trawling nets typically ranges between 12-24 months, post-usage they become worn and beyond repair.

Currently, this specialized fishing material, once used to trawl deep-sea fish from the marine bottom, is being repurposed for another type of catch: hostile aerial vehicles.

Charitable Effort Transforms Discarded Gear

A Breton charity has sent two shipments of nets totaling 280 kilometers to Ukraine to safeguard soldiers and civilians along the frontline where hostilities peak.

Russian forces use low-cost aerial vehicles equipped with combat payloads, directing them by remote control for ranges of up to 25 kilometers.

"Since the conflict began, the war has evolved. Before we didn't even think about drones, but now it's a unmanned vehicle battle," stated a humanitarian organizer.

Tactical Use of Trawling Gear

Military personnel use the nets to create tunnels where aerial vehicle blades become ensnared. This method has been likened to spiders catching flies in a net.

"The Ukrainians have told us they cannot use generic mesh material. They have been sent quite a few that are unusable," the organizer continued.

"The materials we provide are made of horse hair and used for deep-sea fishing to catch monkfish which are exceptionally strong and impact the material with a force equivalent to that of a drone."

Expanding Uses

At first employed by medical personnel safeguarding treatment facilities near the battle area, the nets are now employed on transport routes, bridges, the medical facility access points.

"It's incredible that something so simple proves so effective," commented the humanitarian director.

"We don't have lack of fishing nets in this region. It presents a challenge to know where to send them as various companies that repurpose the gear have closed."

Logistical Hurdles

The humanitarian group was created after community members sought help from the organizers requesting assistance with basic necessities and treatment resources for communities back home.

A team of helpers have transported two lorry consignments of relief supplies 2,300 kilometers to the border crossing point.

"After being informed that Ukraine required mesh material, the fishing community responded immediately," commented the organization leader.

Drone Warfare Development

Russia is using FPV unmanned aircraft comparable to those on the retail industry that can be piloted by distance operation and are then loaded with combat charges.

Russian pilots with live camera streams steer them to their targets. In certain regions, military personnel report that nothing can move without attracting the attention of clusters of "killer" suicide aircraft.

Protective Strategies

The trawling material are suspended from structures to form protective passageways or used to cover fortifications and equipment.

Ukrainian drones are also fitted with pieces of netting to deploy against opposition vehicles.

By July this year, Ukraine was facing more than five hundred unmanned aircraft per day.

Global Aid

Multiple tons of used fishing gear have also been provided by marine workers in Nordic countries.

An ex-marine industry representative declared that local fishers are particularly willing to assist the military campaign.

"They experience satisfaction to know their discarded equipment is going to help save lives," he stated publicly.

Funding Limitations

The organization currently lacks the monetary means to dispatch additional materials this year and discussions were underway for Ukraine to send lorries to retrieve the gear.

"We will help acquire the material and load them but we don't have the financial capacity to continue organizing transport ourselves," stated the charity spokesperson.

Practical Restrictions

A defense forces representative stated that protective mesh corridors were being implemented across the eastern territory, about three-quarters of which is now reported to be captured and administered by Russian forces.

She explained that enemy drone pilots were increasingly finding ways to breach the netting.

"Protective material cannot serve as a panacea. They are just a particular aspect of safeguarding from drones," she emphasized.

A former produce merchant expressed that the Ukrainians he had met were moved by the assistance from French fishing towns.

"The fact that those in the fishing industry the other side of Europe are providing material to support their defensive measures has caused emotional reactions to their eyes," he remarked.
