The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Cartoon Journey with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance

Throughout this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the world of fairies focuses on gathering teeth from sleeping youngsters and placing gold beneath where they sleep. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only slightly more curious about the underlying economics of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who provide metal in exchange. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous creature he expected.

A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an adventure with a gentle touch of young love (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for children). The fairy and goblin groups are estranged from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings as one. The two species portrayed in the film are incredibly similar, yet both maintain biased views about the opposite side. Fairies are said to be self-centered types, given to taking whatever they fancy, while goblins are allegedly stupid, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario requires a common enemy to join forces against, and this is duly provided in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they want to eat the fairies and goblins, and they serve as quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Overall Impression

You won’t find very many animated films targeting the viewer group that is beginning to have first crushes, but aren’t yet mature enough for the content 14-year-olds view these days instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to become their new favorite movie, but you could do worse.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in Scottish cinemas from 10 October and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
