Synthetic graphics purporting to depict Venezuela's president detained after his capture by the American authorities have garnered many millions of views on social media.
The Way AI Images of Maduro Surfaced Within Hours
Initial inauthentic AI image seemingly displaying him being escorted off a plane circulated a brief time later. This image was not shared any authoritative government accounts; rather, it was published on X by an profile purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
We’ve checked Google’s SynthID, determining the image was generated or edited with AI tools.
Further AI-generated pictures began to spread in the ensuing hours, purporting to present more angles of the leader in custody. Visible watermarks on these pictures show they came from an Instagram profile called ultravfx.
AI analysis confirms all of these pictures were also created or altered Google AI.
Authentic Image Posted but Fabrications Continued
Donald Trump posted the initial authentic image of Maduro in handcuffs aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. Yet following this real photo was published, AI-generated images continued to spread but were modified to incorporate the grey athletic wear worn by Maduro.
Digital forensics indicate these altered fabrications were originally uploaded on the video platform by a digital art profile. Again, analysis found the new graphics were created or altered generative artificial intelligence.
